Getting ready to head off to UNC Chapel Hill this weekend instead of the originally scheduled Georgia Tech. After traveling last weekend then driving to Clemson for 7 events on Monday and Tuesday, the last thing I wanted to do was sit on a bus for a 5+ hour trip to Atlanta. I'll be throwing the discus and javelin as well as pole vaulting today.
For a recap of the Clemson multi-events.........
I guess traveling up to PA and back and then driving to Clemson, SC the day before the meet had me a little flat and sluggish. Even with prevailing winds, I could only manage 11.32 in the 100m and 7.00m (23') in the long jump. The shot was sub-par also only throwing 14.20m (46'8"). I started to feel some tightness in my lower back so I decided shut it down for the day.
The second day also provided good conditions but the "pep" was still not quite there as I managed 14.90 in the hurdles.
I am pleased with the progress of my discus. While I failed to hit a very clean release, I still threw 45.03m (147' 9"). I had been very excited for the vault since I had yet to compete on my "new" poles. I felt very fast and relaxed on the runway and had an easy clearance at 5.05m (16'6") in warm-ups, easily the highest I've ever jumped. I opened at 4.70m (15' 4 3/4") and then passed to 4.90 (16'1"). The bad news is that I didn't clear 4.90m. The good news being that I hit some very good take-offs and moved through my entire series of poles (this means I needed a stronger/stiffer pole than i had). and will be getting another bigger series from Dean Starkey soon! I'm very excited about our progress in the vault and am excited about the future.
The javelin was a bit tough as we threw into a pretty serious headwind and I managed a respectable 57.43m (about 189') given the conditions.
Time to head out!
