Another group of US athletes was 3.5 hours en-route to Rio when (either due to a rader glitch or possible strike at the Sao Palo airport) the plane had to turn around and return to DC. They were not allowing any flights into or out of Sao Palo, and there are no direct flights into Rio. I can't imagine the frustration that would cause. They athletes are supposed to arrive sometime today as it appears as though the airport is up and functioning again!
Took a bus to see the US Women's field hockey team play last night in the semi-finals. Unfortuately I had the wrong start time so we missed all but the last 15 minutes. They won handily 4-1 over Chile. We then road back on the team bus. Pretty crazy as we had 8-10 police motorcycles and an SUV packed with rifle-carrying police! They hold up traffic so there is no delay getting on the freeway and clear the lanes. It's quite an experience.
The word out thus far is that we are getting lots of "boo's". The way I look at it, multi-eventors are not used to any fans/noise so anything is better than what we're used to ;)
One of the best things about this experience thus far is meeting and interacting with athletes from other sports. We've met water polo players, beach volleyball, basketball, syncronized swimming, modern pentathlete's, shooters, futsal and soccer players and the list goes on.
Getting ready to finally compete. Not that we've really been here that long, but it's time to get the show on the road! Competition should be very solid. Despite there being only 13 guys in the competition, we'll see very strong competition from Jamaica, Cuba and Brazil.
