slowly but surely

Just an update to let you all know the progress of my recovery and training. It's been just under 6 weeks since the surgery on my jumping ankle and I must say that I'm very pleased with the progress thus far. I didn't exactly think that I would be sprinting at top speed, hurdling and even jumping (with minimal discomfort) so soon. We competed at Duke last Sunday night in the 3 decathlon throws as well as the hurdles. It was the first time I had come out of the blocks or worn spikes over hurdles since USA Indoors. This was a competition to begin to knock off the rust and get back into competition mode again. I ran "ok" given the lack of hurdling and speed endurance training.....15.41. The 3 throws were as follows. Discus - 41.29m, Shot - 15.08m, Jav. 56.72m. I finished the meet healthy and was able to get a full week of training in this week that included more speed work, finally a lactic acid workout (which wasn't easy), hurdle work and more specific event work. With every training session I'm getting back into it!
We leave bright and early tomorrow morning for Chapel Hill where I'll again hurdle, throw the discus and run a 200. Thanks again for all of the emails of encouragement. Although I'm not able to high or long jump at a very high intensity right now, I'm confident I will be back to form in the coming weeks.
Looking ahead, my first decathlon will be the Pan American Combined Event Challenge in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on May 31- June 1 as a prep meet for the Olympic Trials June 29-30.
Below you'll notice the newest addition to my garage. Thanks to Wake Forest's extensive renovation to their weight room, Helwick hooked up this pretty sweet setup! You'll notice JCJ (Joe Cool Jesus) hanging from the rack. That was courtesy of Colin and Beth Davidson back in 2005 ;) ) Thanks guys !!!
